Request to remove covers from gallery
Jul 1st, 2010, 6:45pm

Alright, I'll admit I didn't look very hard for someone to contact because I shouldn't have to be dealing with this in the first place. I love the Dreamcast community as much as the next guy, and do everything I can to support it.

Perhaps I just got a glimpse at why it's stuck where it is.
dchelp.net/artwork/v/dreamcastdvd/revivedc/
(I can't hotlink until 5 posts apparently)

Doing those covers was a little hobby I started for personal interest, then it slowly spread, and I tried to make more of it. It never got anywhere, because no one would help. I would like these covers taken down. I was not asked permission for their usage. The Photobucket linked is not a mirror. That's the official source for them.

I appreciate that I've been credited, but those are no longer covers I consider satisfactory, and they're no longer the design I'm working with. I also appreciate that they all have many views, and I hope people have enjoyed them, but collaboration is what the scene needs and that isn't what it has.

I'd be more than willing to work with any site that asked, but I don't appreciate the "take and then give credit" attitude.

I would appreciate if an admin would take them down. If this is how site operators choose to "support" the community, then I don't want my work to be a part of this site (which is nothing against this forum or its posters). Covers of mine can be found in the art section of many Dreamcast forums under either comradesnarky or sixtyten or the official Photobucket that is so linked there.

Excuse my defensiveness, but I put a lot of hours into an idea behind this project and planning it out, only found flake helpers, and don't appreciate finally finding my work hosted on a site without my permission.

If the owners would like to legitimately work with the Project, they can feel free to contact me at theeasycure@gmail.com. If not, it would please me that they are off of this site.

I'm not sure what the problem is here, do you want us to ask permission to host a free mirror for your custom covers?

In fact, yes, I do.

I explained myself quite well.

You've put them on there as though you were granted permission. The Photobucket you've linked to isn't the mirror. That's where they're from.

The idea was never to just have them floating around the internet like that. I'd rather not share any more details or ideas for fear of those ending up hosted here as well. I was ready to launch a website for them in 2008 before a lot of personal shit came up, and coming back to work on them again now, and potentially do that, I'm not pleased with this.

You're not entitled to them because you've come across them and reuploaded them.

You could've took a few minutes out of your day, registered wherever you first found them, sent me a PM (or just clicked profile and found my email) and said "Hey look, we'd love to mirror these here, can you work with us?" and I would've been plenty happy to allow that and provide new and updated ones as soon as they're available.

I'm absolutely being an asshole about this, and I realize it, but it's a simple request. Instead of being a smartass about it, you could apologize and say well can we continue to host them, but you get bitchy and act like you have a right to them, and I'd like them removed. They'll be available elsewhere for your community members to find just as easily.

Your first post is confusing, you said "I love the Dreamcast community as much as the next guy, and do everything I can to support it", then you ask for the covers to be taken down, that doesn't make any sense to me.

We have put in place a limit of five posts before allowing links to try and combat spam on the forum, it is just a preventative measure and is not meant to annoy anyone, here's a link to the album you are concerned about:

ReviveDC Project DVD Covers

You have misread the album description, it clearly says "Mirror for", it does not imply that Photobucket is the mirror, it also has the URL for the original source. We have tried to credit every source in every album, if the covers come from another site we try to ensure the description says the album is a mirror. On top of that we have tried to credit every custom cover within the gallery, just click on any of your covers and you will see. Try to download any of your covers and you will also see Sixtyten has also been added to the filename. Nobody else within the community has gone to those lengths to create an archive for custom Dreamcast covers.

I am really at a loss here, the whole reason your custom covers are in the gallery is for the community, in fact everything on the site is for the community. Hundreds of covers that were once considered lost are within the gallery, and we are also still tracking down the ones that are missing. The covers are not floating around the internet, they are archived for the community.

How is one question asking what you want being a smartass?, we will gladly continue to mirror your custom covers for the community just as we do with thousands of other covers, but if you still want your covers removed, just post back.

Now that I've had some time to chill out..

It was initially angering because in so many places, the response to my idea was "no one would be interested in this. The scene is essentially dead. There is no way to rally support."

My anger about them being put here stemmed from the fact that so many projects which get started (translations, ports, whatever) get this massive fanfare, and get passed around to so many sites, but no one wants to help. It's always a one man project, and everyone always wonders why nothing comes of it. With my second pass at this I've somewhat accepted that it will be a one man effort, and likely on a much smaller scale than I ever would like.

I feel as though a fair compromise is this; you can definitely continue to mirror the covers, as they seem to be very popular, and I don't want to cut out casual fans who may not visit many sites. If you don't think I'm too much of a dick by now, I'd like to be able to submit new designs to someone here so they can put them up, and a cover printing guide so people don't end up with an off size print on an 8.5x11 piece of paper that doesn't quite fit a DVD case.

I also compiled pretty extensive information on several commercial games, and might have some tutorials you guys don't (didn't browse around much, but I used to use love the stuff DCEvo put out back in 03 when I started), if there's an interest in that. I'd have to track down the files, but it wouldn't be too hard.

So, I would like to apologize for my reaction. I guess the simple version to explain myself is; "if they liked these, and thought they would be a great resource, why didn't they ask for my help?"

The problem stems back many years, the Dreamcast community has always been fragmented for one reason or another, there are always small pockets of fans here and there, but now the community is even smaller it's easy for someone looking from the outside to see the scene as dead. I guess someone would really want to be a part of the community to even consider helping with any projects, and to be honest I do not think there are that many that can spare the time to help (or maybe they just cannot be bothered).

Sadly sometimes it does end up being a one man effort, but the way I look at it is like this: if just one person gets some pleasure out of something you have created then the effort was worth it. For every single person that likes something, there will be thousands of others who do not, but is that a reason to deprive that one person of simple pleasure.

I am sure the community would be grateful for any contribution, I am not sure how we will go about submissions though, I guess we could look into setting up an FTP account or something (if not good old email), I'll get back to you about that. A printing guide would be great, are you using just text or including pictures?. We only have a couple of guides in the gallery so far, perhaps something like these would work:

Tutorials

We are primarily an independent (homebrew) network, we had planned on doing something for a commercial section but the work on the indie stuff takes all our free time. Perhaps in the future we will incorporate a commercial game section within DCHelp. I will point out though that we do not want any warez on the sites (there's enough grey area material already), we are trying to keep the network as legal as possible, the line has been drawn for custom covers and scans, and we will not host or link to commercial games.

Apology accepted, I too would like to apologize for any problems caused by not contacting you almost two years ago when we first put the mirror album in the gallery. It certainly was not our intention to cause any problems, all we are trying to do is gather together all the contributions that have been made for the community (and maybe show a few people along the way that the scene is not dead after all).

To be honest, back then we had just started to rebuild the sites from the ground up after being hacked, there was no real direction of where to go or what to do, and as you have found out it can be disappointing trying to rally support for yet another Dreamcast project. We decided to go it alone and try to build up a repository of all the fragmented community output, the gallery is just one part of the repository (and even that is far from being complete).

An FTP account seems like a lot of work, I'll work in any way that would be most convenient to you.

I understand not wanting warez on sites like this, as most don't allow it. Everyone has opinions on it, but, it's definitely not appropriate for a legitimate site.

The commercial information that I've compiled for games basically encompasses review compilations, developers, release dates, number of players, regional differences between versions, bits of information that no site has truly successfully compiled across the entire Dreamcast library. Dreamcast-Scene has a good start on something like that, but they get bot attacked so often that it's difficult to access. The lack of a set style or required information for articles (or so it seems) means wildly different content for each game as well.

To finish replying entirely out of order... :p

The printing guide...probably mostly text, with pictures as well. I'll need to dive into my Windows partition and find out how it works on there, too.

If you are interested in using DCHelp as a base for the commercial game info you have compiled, I will get in touch with Curt (our web Guru) to try to sort where to go next.

If you need to talk out ideas or anything related to your artwork just send me a PM, I will check back here tomorrow (maybe later tonight) when things slow down a bit at home, as much as I love the Summer - I truly hate the chores Angry.

Looks like all the info was stashed on my 1tb drive which suffered a long and slow data corrupting death.

I still think it would be great to have some site which compiles commercial information really well though, and I wouldn't mind reassembling it.
