Why isn't it working.
Apr 23rd, 2006, 6:44am

I will try to be a clear as possible.

My friend just gave me his Dreamcast and I downloaded a game in CDI format and looked at how to burn CDIs with Alcohol 120% and I did that burnt my game suscessfully. Then I went to pop it into my Dreamcast and it only went to the Main Screen where it says "Play"; "File" etc... And then another friend said that it's not working because you need a Boot Disc CD. Now I go find a Boot Disc. I found one here. http://imrtechnology.ngemu.com/apps.htm and I followed the instructions that gave me and it STILL didn't work. So now what the hell am I supposed to do? And I am 99% sure that I did everything correctly. I will be very happy if you help me out. Thank in Advance.

Congrats on getting a Dreamcast. I'll try to help you:

First you don't need a Boot Disc. Few programs need it, but even those can be made selfboot with little knowledge.

Alcohol120% should work fine with all CDIs. Try the TAO mode. That always worked for me.

What I didn't exactly were able to understand from your post was if the Dreamcast accepted the CD and booted to some screen saying "'Play', 'File', etc..." or if it just boots to the DC's own menu ?

Anyway, I guess you should try one of the releases from our main site and try to get that to work at first.

Maybe try this one:

You will need a keyboard to input commands, at that screen type root and then press enter. The beginners guide at the DC Linux page should help you with some other commands.

I don't see what your trying to accomplish... DCLinux is a Linux distro, but considering the DC system limitations, how old it is, etc., why would you want to run anything on it?

As far as Dreamcast OSes goes, Dreamshell is the only one worth noting.

Well, it has a "modular" approach in order to save RAM space.

If you're willing/able to build your own SD card for the Dreamcast, a lot of their focus was put into doing things like loading ISOs (9660), or dumping your DC games to it (GDI format).

Playing MP3, OGG. (WIP)

And, I believe there were a few Linux/Cygwin functions present, at least in the older versions.

Some functions for your DC like - VMU, RAM, and Disc (cd-r, gd-r) exploration.

There may have been an attempt to allow internet browsing as well.

Here is one of the team's posts from another forum:

Code:
- File System SD Card is now exempt from the limit of 8.3, you can use long file names and file names in Russian. And the library itself to work with the FAT has been updated.
- File Manager is updated. Added new features work with files (archiving, extracting, renaming), and also supported more formats to open or load files, if necessary, load the appropriate module.
- Updated DreamShell desktop. Added icon for the console.
- Fixed modules mp3 and ogg, now when loaded the console commands appear to play these formats, as well as their support is implemented in the file manager.
- Added a module from the VC/DC 0.2, but it is not yet working correctly, it's hoped in time for release, still need to defer to the next.
- Added commands gzip and bzip2 for work with archives.
- The cursor in the GUI can now be changed at any time.
- Add new events in the xml <body> - "onopen", "onclose", "onunload".
- Path in xml can now be relative. And as well as the possibility to set the working directory for DreamShell.
- Now DreamShell can be loaded directly from SD card using the "DreamShell from SD Loader".
- Added module "sdiso". When his loaded, added the command in the console "sdiso", which can run ISO images from SD cards, as this module is built into the file manager so you can start clicking on the ISO image file.
- Some minor bug corrections and code optimization. New and modified some of the old API functions.

Well..., there were plans from the Spanish Dreamcast scene to cannibalize Dreamcast coders cables, link cables, or BBAs, and sell them.

In the end the amount of cables needed would of been impractical, and the project just disappeared.

There was the method 'jj1odm' used to build one from scratch, which implemented the serial port:
